Once the royal starship landed on Tatooine from the damage, Artoo met Anakin Skywalker and they soon became loyal partners. Years later when the Galactic Civil War began, Artoo’s fate changed when Princess Leia hid the Death Star plans in its memory banks. Once again, Artoo traveled to Tatooine to deliver the message to Obi-Wan and meet his new ally, Luke Skywalker. The two worked together across the original trilogy and reunited once again in The Last Jedi. With all of the friends and impacts this droid has made, the galaxy would be a different place without R2-D2.
